Korea’s High Suicide Rate

Posted by Dhina Lieva on Tuesday Sep 2, 2008 Under Daily Living

News has it that Korea, particularly South has a high rate of killing one ownselves. South Korea’s government is working on a package measures to reduce the country’s high suicide rate. As i read, jumping under subway trains and taking pesticides are some of the things, to name a few, of killing themselves.

The suicide rate hit a record high for Korea in 2005, with 21.5 in every 100,000 South KOreans killing themselves.

Suicide as per my research is the fourth cause of death in South Korea. It is a reflection of changing and and conflicting gender roles, economic hardships and domestic violence. However, this plays down the role of mental illness and other social conditions that significantly contribute to the statistic. The World Health Organization has estimated that 90 percent of all suicide victims have some kind of mental health condition, most commonly depression or substance abuse. This means that if these conditions could be acknowledged and treated, there would be a dramatic decrease in the suicide rate.

Like most Asian nations, South Korea does not have a well developed concept of mental illness, especially as a treatable disease. Certainly, the recovery-based, consumer-driven model that exists in the West has not been implemented here. In addition, there is a lot of stigma attached to various mental disorders, meaning that people are living in hell because they feel they cannot seek the treatment they need in order to cope and eventually recover. Those who are brave enough may very well find themselves locked away in an asylum.

I just can’t imagine why people choose to kill themselves than enjoying the lives given by God. Were there really heavy burdens in which they can’t endure anymore struggling for their lives?

Just early last week, my cousin’s husband tried to kill himself. A 21 years old, hanged himself with a rope. And guess who saw his hanged body?, his son, a three year old son, whom he asked to buy a softdrink outside their house, and realizing why he did that was because he had this plan of killing himself. But fortunate enough, the child saw his father, tounged out and black. The rueful child cried differently, different as in the whole neighbors could hear. Upon hearing this cry, their neighbors hastily went to the house and prodded on what made this child’s cry. Then that was it, they saw my cousin’s husband tightly hanged and strangled himself by the rope on the roof. Abruptly brought to the hospital, treated and survived the 50/50 suicider.

According to my mother and my cousins, financial problem was the reason of committing this suicide. But very hostile, he just agitated the problem. Instead of trying to fix the very balderdash problem, he just made  the situation very complicated. And not only that, he also etched an ugly and sad memory to his son. Memories like this, that almost broke his son’s heart is hard to forget.

Back to suicide rate, it’s nice to know that Philippines this time, does not rank first. We are at 84th.

Backlinks can become a worthwhile aspect as well as facilitate with off page internet marketing. Have you ever seen backlinks cause a negative affect to search engine rankings? And do you know if there is a technique to find when Google Adwords is better than building links? I personally am part of many websites and even manage a link building company. Even so, I at times find it useful to use Google PPC compared to building links.
